To begin with, you will be needing supplies first to sew your perfect fitting decorative pillow case cover. Supplies You will need are listed as follows:
Before sewing, wash the pillow cover fabric beforehand like you normally wash clothes. Because if not, the unwashed sewn fabric will shrink in a hot wash or dryer later and causes the joints to rip. Normal washing is required and then you can hang it out to dry later! This keeps the pillow cover in nice shape after sewing and one wash.
But if you are in a hurry and need to get started with the sewing soon, then at least steam press the fabric.
Firstly, in the process of the making pillow covers, you must measure the size in order to begin with sewing your pillow covers. And taking size dimensions are fairly easy if your pillow already has cover on.
For covered pillow:
For uncovered pillow:
Let’s say if you are taking measurements of your pillow and it turns out to be 16×26 inch pillow, then you will add one inch to your measurements and your final size measurements will be 17×27.
You have to cut actually three pieces all together, one for the front and two for the back. Some just say that you can just cut one long piece, but we believe that the extra layers and joints make for a better fitting pillow cover.
Let’s look how do we divide 3 pieces fabric measurements. Suppose if your pillow is 16×26, you will cut out one piece that’s 17×27 (Adding one inch to each dimension).
For the other two pieces, you will take ten inches off the length, while the width will remain same, which makes it 17×17. Some people own pillow of square shaped and some have rectangular. So, taking measurements for both the types will be different.

Cutting of fabric for square pillows:
To Measure and Cut the Pillow Cover Fabric
Place the fabric wrong side up on your ironing board.
Take the outside edge of one of the smaller panels and fold over one quarter inch of the fabric. Press this down with your iron.
Now fold again by another one quarter inch and press with your iron again.
Sew the hem down about an 1/8 inch from the inside edge. Then backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitches.
Next comes the sewing of front and back panels altogether. We advise you to use a half inch seam allowance.
Sewing is done, now flip the cover right side out and insert the pillow in the cover and enjoy.
All done and there you go!
